European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv on Monday, joined by other European and Canadian leaders, bringing with her a €3.5 billion financial package for Ukraine. The visit, coming as the country enters its third year of war with Russia, is a strong statement of support.

Von der Leyen’s presence in Kyiv signifies more than financial aid—it sends a clear message on a day when Russia seeks to claim victory over Ukraine. With Washington showing increasing hesitation in its support, Europe is reaffirming its commitment to Kyiv.

Alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and leaders from Northern and Baltic Europe, Von der Leyen expressed unwavering backing for Ukraine. “We are in Kyiv today, because Ukraine is Europe,” she wrote on social media. “In this fight for survival, it is not only the destiny of Ukraine that is at stake. It’s Europe’s destiny.”

During their visit, European leaders will attend a summit to discuss Ukraine’s strategy for negotiations and security guarantees.

Other high-profile attendees include Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, all of whom have gathered in Kyiv to emphasize their support.
